(why? because if you asked good jazz musicians through history what they practise, they have usually said 'mostly we just learn tunes'!) so we learn tunes. but as we learn the tunes together we also have two more very important aims. one is to pass on the 'feeling' of jazz - we are passionate about the music and believe this 'feeling' to be part of a magic sound connection with the world that lies deep at the heart of our humanity. the other aim is more straightforward - through a lifetime of playing, studying and teaching we have worked out a specific set of skills (and related conceptual areas) needed for jazz small group playing, and we are determined to pass them on to you! our programme we offer short courses, regular ensembles and individual lessons throughout the year. for our 2017-18 season we are running the following: course days • new year jazz (jan 6-7) • jazz shed (various dates) • spring bimp (april 28-29) • standards weekend ( june 9-10) • blues & rhythm weekend (june 23-24) • big band weekend (july 7-8) • jeff clyne improvisation day (july 15) • summer bimp ( july 28-29) • summer school short (august 4-6) • summer school long (august 24-27) • jazz singers & accompanists summer weekend (september 1-2) the jeff clyne day is suitable for all levels, while the spring and summer bimp weekends are good for jazz beginners & improvers; all other courses are aimed at players of improver, intermediate and advanced levels. ensembles • gollum 1 (beginner) • gollum 2 (improver) • mordor 1 (intermediate) • mordor 2 (intermediate) • mordor 3 (intermediate) • bilbo 1 (intermediate +) • bilbo 2 (intermediate +) • gandalf (advanced) • jazz singers & accompanists (improver/intermediate/advanced) • guitar improvers (improver/intermediate) 121 lessons • jazz piano, jazz singing, vocal technique, improvisation, audition preparation, double bass, theory, jazz drums - by arrangement (all levels) jam sessions • yes, we have a regular jam session! this runs once a month on a sunday (10.30am- 4.30pm). bring your own music (or browse our great selection of jazz tunes) to try out with our superb house rhythm section! suitable for all levels. more details on the courses page. how to join us there are a number of different ways for you to take part: occasional member - just buy in the separate course days or individual lessons as and when you like. guest member - for players taking several lessons and/or course days the annual guest membership (£65) brings 10% discount on activities and access to the growing resources of our members area. regular member - this means joining one of our ensembles that meet regularly (generally monthly) through the year. regular members can buy in extra course days and/or lessons as they like, at a 20% member discount. pathway member - in this season (2017-18) we are launching the jazz school uk pathway. this is a structured programme for players seekng a more intensive and personalised schedule, involving a combination of ensemble(s), 121 tutorials, course days and guided personal study. an information sheet is available here . what now?
